Today we’re participating in the “Writings From the Heart” book tour with Beth Ann Masarik. Please welcome Beth to Lizzyland:
Hello everyone! Remember me? Back in February, Lizzy was kind enough to host me on the blog tour for my debut novel, The World Among us. Today, I am here to tell you about an anthology that I coordinated called Writings From the Heart: Stories and Poetry From Around the World. It is a YA anthology that consists of both poetry and short stories from 30 different authors. This book reaches countries as far as India and Australia.
Pretty cool huh?
What’s even more awesome about this collection, is that all proceeds made from this book go to the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of NY pediatric cardiology unit. My cardiologist, Dr. Pilgrim, began a new program to help transition young adult patients into the adult program. As a patient myself, I can personally attest to how important and difficult it is to find an adult cardiologist that really understands pediatric cardiac defects.
When I was born in 1984, I was diagnosed with a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. It’s difficult for me to explain, but I was successfully operated on by the wonderful surgeons in the North Shore/LIJ health system, which is one of the top health systems in the world.
Instead of going on about myself, I’d like to share some information with you about one of the contributors to the anthology, and why they contributed to it.
Today, I am featuring poet, Joel Allegretti, who is the author of the “Pig Child” collection.
Joel Allegretti (www.joelallegretti.com) is the author of two full-length volumes from The Poet’s Press: The Plague Psalms (2000) and Father Silicon, selected by The Kansas City Star as one of 100 Noteworthy Books of 2006, a list that included novels by Cormac McCarthy and Thomas Pynchon. In 2010 Poets Wear Prada released his third collection, Thrum, a chapbook of poems and poetic essays about musical instruments.
Allegretti’s poems have appeared in The New York Quarterly, MARGIE, Fulcrum, Voices in Italian Americana, Sentence: A Journal of Prose Poetics and many other national journals, as well as in The Best American Poetry blog.
His fiction has appeared in Think Journal, The Adroit Journal, autolycus: rogue literary journal and Petrichor Machine. His ‘‘Aqua: A Play in One Repeated Act” was a semifinalist in the 2010 KNOCK International Play Contest.
Allegretti’s poetry was the basis of two song cycles by Frank Ezra Levy, whose symphonic work is available in the American Classics series on Naxos.
Allegretti is a member of the Academy of American Poets and ASCAP.
His reason for participating is…‘‘I’m interested in the anthology because of its intended role as a fund raiser for a hospital. In 2008 I had a serious physical accident and was under the care of Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation. As a writer who was hospitalized and steered to recovery by dedicated, capable staff, I’m sympathetic toward a literary project designed to raise money for a medical facility.”
Thank you again Lizzy, for having me on your blog today! Below is purchase information for the anthology.
